Defensive Midfielder (CDM)

Position Overview

• Position: Positioned in front of the defensive line.
• Role: Shield the defense, disrupt opposition attacks, and initiate build-up play.
• Typical Formations:
  • 4-3-3: As the deepest midfielder in a trio.
  • 4-2-3-1: Paired with another holding midfielder.

Key Attributes and Skills

1. Tackling:
   • Strong ability to win the ball cleanly.
2. Passing Range:
   • Accurate short and long passes to transition play.
3. Positioning:
   • Awareness to block passing lanes and anticipate opposition moves.
4. Composure:
   • Calm under pressure to distribute the ball effectively.
5. Interceptions:
   • Anticipating passes and cutting off attacks.

Responsibilities

1. Defensive Shielding:
   • Stay between the defensive line and opposition attackers.
2. Ball Retention:
   • Keep possession and distribute the ball effectively.
3. Breaking Play:
   • Stop counterattacks with tackles or tactical fouls.
4. Supporting Defense:
   • Drop back as an extra defender when needed.
